Waiting in a Small World

Waiting sucks.

Spending this weekend with my wife in the ICU was an opportunity for multiple perspectives.

From the healthcare provider end, I know how crazy a day can get to just be able to keep up, get by, and survive a 12-hour shift.

From the receiving end of healthcare, things change, regardless of the extra grace and understanding from knowing what it’s like.

15 minutes go by so fast for a provider.

15 minutes in a box can be an eternity.

It doesn’t matter how much patience and understanding you put in. Waiting gets worse, the smaller your world gets. The less control you have, the more torture waiting can become.

The next time you encounter someone irate from waiting, disregard the subject of the waiting. Empathize and recognize the world they are in while in the waiting.
