How can I become a great leader?
If this is how you start your Leadership Journey, then you’ve already missed a couple of points.
You Are Not The Focus
The mission and vision can be predetermined but the real journey starts with others and the team. The better questions that would lead one to the semblance of good leadership, then, would be as follows:
- What’s important to them?
- Why are they here?
- How can their condition and circumstances improve?
- What are the barriers to their success?
- What does a win-win situation look like for us?
The leader finds his or herself along the way. All while seeking to find the answers to the questions that truly matter.
Greatness Is Never The Goal
There is no such thing as a great leader.
There are only great teams that accomplish great things.
A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.
Lao Tzu
The world can give all its fleeting praise and accolades, but a genuinely good leader’s work is never done. The human condition where we all meet is in constant flux. People come and go. The pursuit of greatness is folly at best in light of this truth.
And so let us reframe the question. The better one I’d propose is this.
What do my people need?
