Being On Point

Geometry 101, a line is a series of points. Points make a line. Before we worry about trajectory, speed, magnitude, and the overall story that we are trying to depict with our line – the big picture, we must be mindful of our points. No points, no line.

What’s The Point?

In relation to time, the point that only matters is this moment where you are at. The current state. Everything else is irrelevant, at least for now. What you do at this point determines every other points ahead.

  • Stop here and be done?
  • Rest here to contemplate what’s next?
  • Pivot here and change direction?

It all happens at this point. What you decide to do here dictates the rest of the story.

Progress Takes Three . . .

In relation to others, everyone has their own point. Two adjacent points make straight. But nature is not known for straight lines. Last I checked, you and I are a part of nature. It is therefore unnatural to stop at two if we want to make any meaningful progression in life. Two perspectives can just cause a standstill.

The pool is enriched with a third – a tie breaker. Add the third point and the magic happens. Notice our ellipsis above? It signifies what’s coming next, we’re not done, and the possibilities are up ahead. Bend, make a sharp angle, or try to see how long you can keep going straight. Shapes are now possible for as long as you keep stringing together points.

Make Your Point.

In relation to living life, we tend to support a big picture mentality. Nothing is wrong with it; not until such approach detracts us from minding what we do, and how we choose to be, at any given point. Failing to give value to the building blocks of our big picture is not how we learn to better ourselves, nor help us find joy and appreciation for what life is truly about.

“I believe that all centers that appear in space – whether they originate in biology, in physical forces, in pure geometry, in color – are alike simply in that they all animate space. It is this animated space that has its functional effect upon the world, that determines the way things work, that governs the presence of harmony and life.”

Christopher Alexander

Life is about living in the now. That’s the center. Don’t get too preoccupied with the picture you’re trying to make. Be at the point. The grand design will turn out just fine.
