The search for life’s purpose is almost as old as the dawn of human life itself. The more advanced we’ve become, the more complicated the search has been. Society finds value in the doing more than the being. May I interest you into something more simple than a 12-step guide to stepping into purpose?
Your Desires Betray You
Thirsting for success, hunger for fame and power, longing for prestige and victory; any of these that seek satisfaction are all transient. It will never last. Time proves this. If you drink to satisfy thirst, consume to satisfy hunger, obtain to satisfy longing; it’s only a matter of time before you’re back to the state of wanting. This cycle of desire and satisfaction is no purpose.
Getting from A to B
This is what matters the most, right? Your purpose is to get somewhere in life. If that is all there is then you’re just living in segments. Life is larger than this segmentation we choose to create. It’s a self-limiting pursuit and is definitely no purpose. It is folly to think that our purpose is a mere attainment of B. When you do get there, it won’t be long until the cycle of desire activates and tells you that there’s got to be a C or B.5 out there for you.
Why is Just Being Not Enough?
Society frowns upon people that are and just be. It is deemed as laziness. Those people are viewed as ones that lack motivation. Contentment, for society, is folly for it hinders growth.
But then who are the ones with the most joy? Aren’t they the ones that truly know what matters, and appreciate what they do have?
When you start living life at point A, the B and any subsequent points thereafter will be just like A – it’s life that is to be lived and not something to be pursued.
I have a simple life. I mean, you just give me a drum roll, they announce my name, and I come out and sing. In my job I have a contract that says I’m a singer. So I sing.
Tony Bennett
Trees sway in the wind, birds come and go, flowers bloom – all being, all into its own purpose. All without the pride of self determination and control. All without question. What can be simpler and more on point than this?
Life IS the goal; and Living, the ONLY purpose.
There’s your ‘why’.
Now focus on ‘how’.
